Missoula

University of Montana’s town, a real downtown brewery scene, and the Clark Fork running through the center of everything.

Missoula is the Montana city that comes closest to feeling like a Pacific Northwest college town transplanted east of the Continental Divide. The University of Montana sets the cultural rhythm, the Clark Fork River traces the downtown's southern edge with riverwalks and parks on both banks, and the brewery footprint per capita rivals any city in the country. Higgins Avenue is the spine of downtown — restaurants, bookstores, the Wilma Theatre, and the Saturday market on the riverfront in summer. Hiking access opens immediately west into the Bitterroot Range and east up the Blackfoot. Montana's adult-use cannabis program has settled in heavily here, with licensed retail across downtown and the Reserve Street commercial corridor. For visiting adults 21+, the rhythm is downtown morning, river or mountain afternoon, brewpub dinner, music or a movie at the Wilma — Missoula does that day better than most cities its size.
