Dispensaries in Missoula, MT: Fifty Shops and the Rules Around Them

The state list shows 50 licensed dispensaries in Missoula, with ten more in Lolo and Florence. Buying is simple; the university and the national forest around town are where the rules tighten.

Dispensaries in Missoula are not hard to find. The Department of Revenue's current list of licensed dispensary locations shows 50 in Missoula alone, every one marked Adult Use, with five more in Lolo just south of town and five in Florence across the Ravalli County line. All of them sell to adults 21+ with valid government ID. The harder part of a Missoula visit is the map around the shops: a university, a national forest at the edge of town and a county tax that changes the math at the register.

Who is on the list

Missoula's 50 locations range from single-store local outfits to statewide chains. Among the names on the Department of Revenue list, checked as of 2026:

  • Cheech & Chong's Dispensoria, with two Missoula locations, one of them downtown
  • The Hi-Line Company, with three Missoula locations, including one on East Broadway
  • The Local, with a downtown store and one in East Missoula
  • Lionheart Cannabis Missoula Dispensary
  • Madhouse Cannabis Farms, in Missoula and again in Lolo
  • Top Shelf Botanicals, on Broadway
  • Bloom, Zen Medicine, Starrbuds, Urban Farmer and Greenhouse Farmacy

The list carries dozens more, and it changes as licenses move and stores open or close, so it is the document to check: verify licensed status with the Department of Revenue at revenue.mt.gov/card/cannabis/. The site's dispensary directory maps the Missoula locations alongside the rest of the state, and the Missoula town hub collects local coverage.

Downtown is not off the map, either. Two of the location names on the list, Cheech & Chong's and The Local, are their downtown stores, so the shops sit close to the same blocks visitors already walk.

What a purchase costs in Missoula County

Montana taxes adult-use cannabis at 20% of the retail price and medical at 4%. Missoula County adds a 3% local option tax on adult-use sales and none on medical, in place since January 2022. That makes adult-use purchases in Missoula 23% and medical 4%. Ravalli County, where Florence sits, also charges 3% on adult-use and nothing on medical, so the drive south does not change the bill.

Medical registry cards go only to Montana residents. Out-of-state students, visitors and anyone else without a Montana card buy on the adult-use side.

How much you can buy

State law sets the limit for adults at 1 ounce of flower, no more than 8 grams of which may be concentrate, and no more than 800 milligrams of THC in edible products. Since July 1, 2026, edibles have been capped at 5 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package. Start low, go slow is the rule for any edible, and for a first one most of all.

The rule, plainly

Montana state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public places. The statute also forbids it on public transportation, in school buses and on the grounds of schools and postsecondary schools, prohibits smoking in hotel and motel rooms unless the room is designated as a smoking room, and makes it illegal to consume while driving or while riding as a passenger in an enclosed vehicle. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal. Landlords and other private property owners can set their own rules.

What it means for your Missoula visit: the riverfront trails along the Clark Fork, the downtown sidewalks, the parks and the University of Montana campus are all off limits. College grounds are named in the statute itself, so the university question has a short answer.

The national forest starts at the edge of town

Missoula is bordered on several sides by the Lolo National Forest, and the forest is federal land. The Department of Revenue states it plainly: cannabis is prohibited under federal law on all federal lands and waters. That covers more of a Missoula weekend than most visitors expect.

  • Montana Snowbowl, the ski area above town, is administered by the Lolo National Forest and runs under a Forest Service special use permit.
  • Pattee Canyon, the 3,200-acre recreation area on Missoula's east side with 27 miles of trails, is Lolo National Forest land open year-round to non-motorized use.
  • The Rattlesnake trail system north of town, including the Rattlesnake Main Trail, is managed by the same forest.

Snowbowl's opening weekend and the late-season events on the mountain appear on the events calendar. Whatever was bought in town stays sealed and in the car, and the car stays out of the driver's reach while it is moving.

Lolo and Florence

The Lolo and Florence storefronts serve the Bitterroot corridor along US 93. Lolo's five locations, including LPC Lolo, Madhouse Cannabis Farms Lolo and Bliss, sit in Missoula County and carry the same 23% adult-use tax. Florence's five sit in Ravalli County at the same combined rate. Impaired driving is illegal on every mile of US 93 between them.

Before you go

  • Bring valid government photo ID; every Missoula location on the list is adult-use and 21+ only.
  • Budget 23% in combined tax on adult-use purchases.
  • Check the Department of Revenue list for current locations before a long drive across town.
  • Keep purchases sealed and out of reach while driving.
  • Count Snowbowl, Pattee Canyon and the Rattlesnake as federal land, because they are.
