Bozeman Dispensary Guide: How Buying Works in Gallatin County

Bozeman has one of the densest dispensary maps in Montana, with more on the road to Four Corners and Belgrade. The buying is easy; the federal land around town is where the rules tighten.

5 min read

A Bozeman dispensary is not hard to find. The Montana Department of Revenue's current location list shows 72 licensed adult-use locations with a Bozeman address, four of them out at Four Corners, plus another 13 in Belgrade. For adults 21+, the buying works the same at every one of them. What changes the math is the ground around town: a university campus, a ski area on national forest land, and Yellowstone to the south.

How many dispensaries Bozeman has

Gallatin County allows adult-use sales, so the shops never had to fight their way into town. The result is a market that spreads from town out to Four Corners and up the interstate to Belgrade. Every Bozeman-area location on the state list is licensed for adult use, which means a visitor with ID can buy at any of them.

Some names repeat across the valley. Lionheart Cannabis has a Bozeman store and a Four Corners store. Lone Peak Caregivers runs one in town and one at Four Corners. Grizzly Pine and Apogee Gardens appear under both Bozeman and Belgrade. Others on the list include Top Shelf Botanicals, Treasure Tree and Montana Jane's Dispensary. A long list is not an endorsement of any of them; it is a sign that price and selection vary, and that a short drive usually turns up an alternative.

The Bozeman town hub pulls together local shops and events, and the full statewide map is in the dispensary directory. For any shop's license status, the Department of Revenue's cannabis pages at revenue.mt.gov/card/cannabis/ are the source of record.

What adults 21+ can buy

The rule, plainly: Montana lets adults 21+ possess up to 1 ounce of usable marijuana, of which no more than 8 grams can be concentrate and no more than 800 mg of THC can be in edible products. Dispensaries are not allowed to sell past those amounts in one go.

What it means for your visit:

  • One ounce is the ceiling for flower, and the concentrate and edible caps sit inside it, not on top of it.
  • Edibles changed in 2026. Since July 1, 2026, each edible serving is capped at 5 mg of THC and each package at 100 mg. Start low, go slow; the serving cap already does part of that work.
  • Medical cards are for Montanans. The state registry issues cards to Montana residents. Visitors buy at the adult-use counter with everyone else.

What it costs at the register

Montana taxes adult-use cannabis at 20%. Gallatin County added the full 3% local option in 2023, so adult-use purchases in Bozeman, Four Corners and Belgrade carry 23% in tax. Medical purchases run 4% state plus the same 3% county rate. Since 2025 the tax has been calculated on the price after discounts, so a sale price lowers the tax as well as the shelf number.

Where the rules tighten around Bozeman

Montana law prohibits cannabis use in public places, and that covers the sidewalks of Main Street, parks and trailheads. Bozeman adds a few local wrinkles that catch visitors.

Montana State University. The campus bans marijuana use and possession across the whole property, buildings and open areas included, because MSU follows federal law as a federally funded school. State law separately prohibits possession on the grounds of any postsecondary school. A game day or a campus visit is a no-possession situation.

Bridger Bowl and the national forest. Bridger Bowl is a nonprofit ski area that operates under a special use permit with the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Cannabis is prohibited under federal law on all federal lands and waters, and the same forest holds Hyalite Canyon, the city's winter climbing and skiing backyard. A purchase in town does not travel well into any of it.

Yellowstone. Same federal rule, larger scale. The park is federal land from the first entrance sign.

Hotels and cars. State law prohibits smoking marijuana in a hotel or motel room unless the room is a designated smoking room, and many Bozeman properties are smoke-free throughout. Any consumption by a driver or a passenger in a moving vehicle is illegal, and driving under the influence is a DUI regardless of what the label says.

Flying in and out

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport sits in Belgrade, about eight miles northwest of town. Montana's framework ends at the state line, and cannabis remains illegal under federal law. Whatever gets bought in Bozeman is meant to stay in Montana.

A short checklist

  • Bring a valid government photo ID; sales are 21+ only.
  • Keep the total under 1 ounce, 8 g of concentrate and 800 mg of edibles.
  • Budget for 23% tax on adult-use purchases in Gallatin County.
  • Leave it out of MSU, Bridger Bowl, the national forest and Yellowstone.
  • Check the events calendar for what is on in town; public events are public places under state law.
