December in Bozeman and Missoula, 2026
Both of Montana's college towns throw their biggest street party of the year on the same Saturday in December, and one of the largest ice-climbing festivals in the country lands the week after.
Montana's December calendar is concentrated into about ten days, and in 2026 the two biggest town events land on the same date. Anyone choosing between Bozeman and Missoula for the first weekend of December is choosing between two versions of the same evening, and the drive between them is more than three hours.
December 5: pick a town
The 46th Annual Christmas Stroll closes Main Street in downtown Bozeman from 4:30 to 7:30 PM. The parade steps off from Main and Willson, the downtown Christmas spiders light, the Bridger Mountain Harmony Chorus sings, and food carts run the length of the street. Free. It is the one night a year downtown Bozeman fills wall to wall, and it has been since 1980.
Holidays on Higgins runs the same day in downtown Missoula, an admission-free day that was formerly the Parade of Lights. The evening runs 4 to 7 PM on North Higgins with the tree lighting, a stationary parade and a makers market. Also free.
They are close enough in character that the answer is whichever town you are nearer. Neither is worth a three-hour winter drive on US 12 to reach.
December 9–13: the Bozeman Ice Festival
The 30th Annual Bozeman Ice Fest runs five days of on-ice instruction in Hyalite Canyon with an evening program in town: gear demos, athlete and guide talks, and films.
The clinics fill months ahead and are the expensive half. The evening program in Bozeman is the accessible half, often free or close to it, and is worth the trip on its own for anyone who has never watched the ice-climbing community assemble in one room. Thirty years in, it is one of the largest festivals of its kind in the country.
Hyalite Canyon Road is the access, and it is a winter road. Traction devices, and a real assessment of the conditions rather than an optimistic one.
Mid-December: the mountains open
Bridger Bowl opens on a weather-dependent date in early-to-mid December most seasons, twenty minutes from Bozeman and still the cheapest serious skiing in the state. The Ridge terrain waits on more snow than the groomed runs do. The projected opening date posts in the fall and moves.
Montana Snowbowl opens on a snow-dependent date in December, fifteen minutes from downtown Missoula, which no other ski area in the state can claim. Grizzly and Paradise both need real coverage before the top opens.
Confirm both on the mountains' own sites. A projected opening is a forecast.
December 31: Bridger's torchlight
Bridger Bowl runs a torchlight parade on New Year's Eve, with snowsports instructors skiing the hill holding torches after dark, followed by fireworks over the base area and a spaghetti dinner in the lodge. Free to watch from the base.
Dress for standing still at 6,000 feet in late December, which is a different proposition from skiing at 6,000 feet in late December.
Into late winter
Snowbowl carries the back half of the season with Girls on Shred in late February, a free day organized by the Board of Missoula girls department, the long-running Snowboard Jam and Demo Days in early March, and the Best of the Bowl race across Alpine, Telemark and snowboard divisions in mid-March. Compliance, quickly
- 21+ only at every dispensary and for every purchase
- Verify licensed status via the Montana Department of Revenue Cannabis Control Division at mtrevenue.gov/cannabis/
- Montana state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces, which covers Main Street, North Higgins and every base area above
- Federal law prohibits cannabis on national forest land, which includes Hyalite Canyon and the terrain around it
- Start low, go slow with edibles, and account for altitude and cold
- Never drive after consuming; Bridger Canyon Road and the Hyalite access in winter demand sober driving absolutely
