The Montana Ski Season Opens on a Guess

Every Montana ski area publishes a projected opening date in the fall and every one of them is a forecast rather than a commitment. The mountains are waiting on the same thing: enough natural snow, or enough cold nights to make it, on enough terrain to be worth running a lift. Planning a 2026–27 winter trip means booking against a pattern and accepting the variance.

The pattern is reliable enough to book on. Here is what it looks like.

Bridger Bowl

Twenty minutes from Bozeman up Bridger Canyon Road. Projected openings land in early-to-mid December most seasons. The groomed terrain opens first; the Ridge, which is the reason serious skiers come to Bridger at all, waits on considerably more snow and is gated on beacon, shovel and probe.

Still the cheapest serious skiing in the state, and the nonprofit structure is why. Lift ticket prices here bear no relationship to what the destination resorts charge two hours south.

On December 31 the mountain runs its torchlight parade: instructors skiing down holding torches after dark, fireworks over the base area, spaghetti dinner in the lodge. Free to watch.

Montana Snowbowl

Fifteen minutes from downtown Missoula, which is a genuine competitive advantage no other Montana ski area has. December opening on a snow-dependent date. Grizzly and Paradise both need real coverage before the upper mountain runs.

Snowbowl carries the most programming of any Montana hill through the back half of the season: Girls on Shred in late February, Snowboard Jam and Demo Days in early March, and the Best of the Bowl race across Alpine, Telemark and snowboard divisions in mid-March. What to book before the dates are announced

Lodging in Bozeman and Missoula the second and third weekends of December, if you want the opening weekend. Both towns absorb their own demand most of the year and neither has slack during the first weekend of December, when the Christmas Stroll and Holidays on Higgins each fill their downtowns.

The Bozeman Ice Festival runs December 9 through 13 in Hyalite Canyon and town. The clinics fill months ahead. If ice is the trip, book that before anything else.

The non-ski winter

The part Montana undersells: the hot springs run all winter, the Big Sky and Whitefish corridors have real off-mountain dining, and the national-park gateways in January are empty in a way they never are in July. Helena and Butte both hold up as a winter stop for reasons that have nothing to do with snow.

Compliance, quickly

• 21+ only at every dispensary and for every purchase
• Verify licensed status via the Montana Department of Revenue Cannabis Control Division at mtrevenue.gov/cannabis/
• Montana state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces, which covers base areas, lodges and lift lines
• Federal law prohibits cannabis on national forest land and on every acre of Glacier and Yellowstone
• Start low, go slow with edibles; altitude, cold and exertion all change how a dose reads, and a lift line is the wrong place to find that out
• Never drive after consuming; Bridger Canyon, the Hyalite access and US 93 in winter demand sober driving absolutely
