Bozeman Ice Festival 2026: Hyalite Canyon, December 9 to 13

Five days of ice clinics in Hyalite Canyon, a road that stays open because climbers help pay for the plow, and a federal-land rule that every visitor buying in Bozeman needs to know.

5 min read

The Bozeman Ice Festival 2026 runs December 9 to 13, with clinics up Hyalite Canyon south of town and registration already open on the festival's site. It is also the week plenty of visitors meet Hyalite for the first time. For adults 21+ who also plan to stop at a Bozeman dispensary, one fact frames the whole trip: Hyalite is national forest, and cannabis is prohibited under federal law on all federal lands and waters.

What the festival is

The festival is a December gathering built around clinics on the frozen waterfalls of Hyalite Canyon, offered at levels from beginner up. The clinic list, schedule and sign-up live on the official site, bozemanicefest.com, which is the place to check what is left, what gear is included and what level each clinic expects. Public happenings around the festival also land on the events calendar.

The road that climbers help keep open

Hyalite Canyon Road climbs into the Custer Gallatin National Forest from the south edge of Bozeman. In winter it stays open because of a three-way funding arrangement between Gallatin County, the national forest and Friends of Hyalite, a local nonprofit. Money raised by the Ice Festival is part of what pays for the plow, which averages roughly $24,000 a year.

What it means for your drive:

  • The plow is not on demand. The road is plowed intermittently, and the federal recreation listing for the canyon warns that it may not be cleared right after every storm.
  • Tires matter. Four-wheel drive, snow tires and chains are the recommendation, not a suggestion for show.
  • Park like a local. Pullouts that leave room for the plow keep the arrangement working.
  • Check before you go. Friends of Hyalite posts road reports, and conditions can stop vehicles below the upper canyon.
  • Snowmobiles stop low. They are not allowed past Moser Road, so the upper canyon is reached by car, ski or foot.

Staying in the canyon

Some visitors want to stay close to the ice. The Forest Service rents Window Rock Cabin in Hyalite through Recreation.gov, about 12.7 miles from South 19th Avenue in Bozeman, and weather-related access problems are not refundable. A rented Forest Service cabin is still Forest Service land. The same federal rule that covers the trailhead covers the cabin and the ground around it, so a stay up the canyon means a cannabis-free stay.

The federal-land rule, plainly

Montana's adult-use law ends where the national forest begins. Hyalite's trailheads, parking areas, campground loops and the ice itself are all federal land. So is Bridger Bowl, which operates under a special use permit with the same national forest, and so is Yellowstone to the south.

What it means for your festival week:

  • Nothing about a state-legal purchase carries onto the forest. Federal law governs there, whatever the receipt from a Bozeman shop says.
  • The canyon road is not a gray zone. A forest road is still forest.
  • Driving rules apply all the way up. Montana prohibits any consumption by a driver or passenger in a moving vehicle, and driving under the influence of marijuana is a DUI. An icy canyon road is the last place to test that.

Buying in Bozeman during festival week

Gallatin County has one of the deepest dispensary maps in the state, and every Bozeman-area location on the Department of Revenue's list is licensed for adult use. The Bozeman town hub and the dispensary directory list local shops.

The rule, plainly: adults 21+ may possess up to 1 ounce, with no more than 8 grams of concentrate and 800 mg of THC in edibles inside that total. Since July 1, 2026, edibles are capped at 5 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package. Start low, go slow. Adult-use purchases in Gallatin County carry 23% tax, the 20% state rate plus a 3% county option. Licensing questions go to the Department of Revenue at revenue.mt.gov/card/cannabis/.

Montana law also prohibits cannabis use in public places. In Bozeman that means sidewalks, parks and public events, including anything downtown during festival week.

The rest of early December in Bozeman

The festival lands a few days after downtown Bozeman's 46th annual Christmas Stroll, set for December 5, 2026, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Main Street fills with families that evening, which makes it a public place in the most literal sense. Bridger Bowl's opening date for the 2026/27 season is announced by the ski area; check its site rather than a projection.

Before the trip

  • Book clinics early on the festival's official site.
  • Carry chains or drive something that does not need them.
  • Treat everything south of the Hyalite turnoff as federal land.
  • Keep purchases inside Montana's limits.
