Helena

State capital, gold-rush downtown architecture, the Mount Helena trail system, and a quieter cannabis-and-history weekend.

Helena is Montana's state capital and one of its better-preserved gold-rush downtowns: Last Chance Gulch — the old mining stream channel, now the pedestrian downtown spine — runs through brick-and-stone buildings dating to the 1880s, with the State Capitol's gold-domed building anchoring the south end. The Mount Helena trail system starts at the edge of downtown and gives the city its everyday running-and-hiking rhythm; Spring Meadow Lake and the Helena National Forest open the weekend possibilities further. Cannabis retail in Helena has been consistent since adult-use launched, with shops downtown and along the Custer / Last Chance Gulch corridor. For adults 21+, Helena suits a quieter visit: a long walk along the Gulch with stops at the brewpubs and the small museums, a Mount Helena climb in the afternoon, dinner that reflects the smaller city scale, and a calm evening at the rental.
