Yellowstone in winter from Gardiner comes down to one road. From early November until spring, nearly every road in the park closes to ordinary cars. The exception is the stretch from the North Entrance at Gardiner to the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City and Silver Gate, by way of Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and the Lamar Valley, which the National Park Service keeps open to wheeled vehicles all year. Everything else in a December-to-February trip from the Montana side follows from that fact, including how adults 21+ who buy in Gardiner or Livingston handle the federal line at the Roosevelt Arch.
The winter calendar, 2026-27
The Park Service's projected dates for this season:
- North Entrance to Northeast Entrance: open year-round to regular vehicles.
- Mammoth Hot Springs to Norris: open to snowmobiles and snowcoaches December 15, 2026, through March 7, 2027.
- West, South and East entrances and the remaining groomed roads: oversnow travel December 15, 2026, through March 15, 2027, with some interior segments closing a few days earlier.
- Beartooth Highway: closed for the season. It typically opens on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.
There is a catch at the far end. In winter the nine miles of road from Cooke City east to the Pilot Creek parking area close to wheeled vehicles, so the year-round road is effectively a long out-and-back from Gardiner rather than a route through. The park posts road status at (307) 344-2117, and texting 82190 to 888-777 signs a phone up for alerts. Open roads are not gated at night, and every date above is subject to weather.
Why people make the drive: the Lamar Valley
The Park Service ranks Yellowstone's northern range among the top places on earth to watch wolves, and the Lamar Valley is the center of it. Winter helps. A white backdrop and bare trees make animals easier to pick out, and because most of the park's wolves hunt elk, finding the elk herds is the usual first step. The viewing happens from pullouts along the year-round road, usually through binoculars or a spotting scope.
The distance rules are not suggestions. Visitors must stay at least 100 yards from wolves and bears and at least 25 yards from bison, elk and every other animal. The Park Service's own advice is that the safest view, and often the clearest, is from inside the car.
Mammoth and the arch
Mammoth Hot Springs, about 5 miles inside the North Entrance, is the park's headquarters and the junction where the oversnow road south to Norris opens on December 15. Past Mammoth, the year-round road heads east toward Tower Junction and the Lamar.
At the entrance itself, the Roosevelt Arch has framed the drive in since 1903, when Theodore Roosevelt laid its cornerstone. Its inscription comes from the 1872 act of Congress that created the park, the first line visitors read on the way in.
The federal line
Here is the part that matters for anyone who stopped at a dispensary on the way down. Everything past the arch is Yellowstone National Park, and the Department of Revenue states the rule directly: cannabis is prohibited under federal law on all federal lands and waters. Montana's adult-use law does not reach inside the park, and it does not matter that the North Entrance is in Montana.
What it means for your winter trip: nothing bought in Gardiner, Livingston or anywhere else goes past the North Entrance. Not in the glovebox, not in a bag in the trunk, not in a cooler. Possession is the violation, not just use.
Buying in Gardiner and Paradise Valley
The Department of Revenue's current list of licensed dispensary locations, checked as of 2026, shows three in Gardiner, all Adult Use, including Holistic Harvest Cannabis Farms and Paradise Organics - Gardiner. Lionheart Cannabis Paradise Valley Dispensary is listed in Emigrant, and Livingston, at the north end of Paradise Valley, has five more, among them Apogee Gardens, Ganja Goddess, Paradise Organics and Top Shelf Botanicals. Winter hours in a park gateway town run short, so call ahead. Verify licensed status with the Department of Revenue at revenue.mt.gov/card/cannabis/, and see the dispensary directory for the full map.
Park County charges a 3% local option tax on both adult-use and medical sales, so purchases in Gardiner, Emigrant and Livingston carry 23% on adult-use and 7% on medical. Medical cards go only to Montana residents; visitors buy adult-use with valid ID showing they are 21 or older.
The state limits apply here as everywhere: 1 ounce of flower, no more than 8 grams of it concentrate, and no more than 800 milligrams of THC in edibles, with each edible serving capped at 5 mg since July 1, 2026. Start low, go slow.
The rule, plainly
Montana state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public places, including the sidewalks of Gardiner and the fishing access sites along the Yellowstone River. The statute forbids consuming while driving or while riding as a passenger in an enclosed vehicle, prohibits smoking in hotel and motel rooms not designated for smoking, and makes driving under the influence illegal. On a two-lane road shared with bison, at dusk in January, that last rule is the one the landscape enforces on its own.
Planning the winter trip
- Base: Gardiner is the town closest to the year-round road. Many winter visitors fly into Bozeman and drive south through Livingston and Paradise Valley.
- Car: Snow tires or chains, a full tank before the arch, and a cold-weather kit. The Lamar Valley has no services.
- Timing: Winter days are short at this latitude, and the drive from Gardiner to the Lamar and back fills most of one.
- Events: Ski-area openings and winter events around Bozeman and Missoula are on the events calendar.
