Gardiner and Big Sky: The North and West-Flank Yellowstone Gateways, Cannabis-Aware
Gardiner holds the Roosevelt Arch at Yellowstone's north entrance. Big Sky handles the Bozeman-side overflow. Each has its own cannabis rhythm.

Gardiner and Big Sky are the two Montana Yellowstone gateways that most tourists don't think about until they're here. Gardiner sits at the original north entrance under the Roosevelt Arch. Big Sky is 50 miles north of West Yellowstone and doubles as a ski destination and a Yellowstone-overflow town. Each has a different shape.
Gardiner, the Historic North Entrance
Gardiner sits at the original Yellowstone entrance — the Roosevelt Arch, dedicated in 1903, is still the iconic photo stop. The town is small, about 900 residents, with a commercial strip running along Scott Street and the Yellowstone River flowing alongside. Licensed dispensaries serve Gardiner; verify current licensed status via the Montana Department of Revenue Cannabis Control Division at mtrevenue.gov/cannabis/. The cabin-rental economy is strong here, especially up toward Paradise Valley just to the north.
Big Sky, Ski + Park
Big Sky sits 50 miles north of West Yellowstone and 50 miles south of Bozeman, in the Gallatin Canyon corridor. The resort economy runs Big Sky Resort (one of the largest ski areas in the country) in winter and the Yellowstone-gateway overflow in summer. Licensed dispensaries in Big Sky cluster along the canyon road. The town meadow restaurant and bar cluster runs year-round with a ski-town rhythm.
The Paradise Valley Stretch
The drive from Gardiner north up Paradise Valley toward Livingston is one of the state's signature short road trips. Chico Hot Springs sits midway, with the cabin-rental inventory that supports a slower cannabis-aware pacing. Montana state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces, including every highway pullout, state park, and commercial hot springs pool.
