Miles City Bucking Horse Sale: A Cannabis-Aware Weekend
The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale is the cowboy Mardi Gras of the West. Cannabis fits the private-rental evenings, never the fairgrounds or street dances.

The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale, held the third full weekend of May each year, is widely considered one of the most significant rodeo gatherings in the Western world. PRCA bronc riding, pari-mutuel horse racing, wild horse races, a massive Western trade show, a downtown parade, and country concerts that have headlined Trace Adkins and Corb Lund. Locally it is called the "Cowboy Mardi Gras." Adults 21+ planning a Bucking Horse weekend need to book lodging months in advance and plan cannabis pacing carefully around the four-day compressed schedule.
The Schedule
Thursday opens with the Pendleton Whisky Kick-Off Concert. Friday through Sunday runs the PRCA rodeo and the pari-mutuel horse racing at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds. Downtown Main Street hosts the parade and a series of nightly street dances. The full town of 8,000 doubles in population during the weekend. Licensed dispensaries in Miles City and Billings (140 miles west) supply the retail side. Verify current licensed status via the Montana Department of Revenue Cannabis Control Division at mtrevenue.gov/cannabis/.
The No-Consumption Zones
Montana state law prohibits cannabis consumption in public spaces, which explicitly covers the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds, the downtown parade route, every street dance venue, the Pendleton Whisky concert grounds, and every bar and restaurant on Main Street. Any cannabis consumption happens at the private rental or hotel room only. The lodging inventory in Miles City fills early for Bucking Horse weekend; booking a rental within walking distance of downtown is the best configuration for a cannabis-aware weekend because it removes the drive-back-to-lodging question.
The Drive-In
Miles City sits 140 miles east of Billings on I-94, and the drive in is a long rural stretch across the eastern plains. Adults 21+ should purchase cannabis at a Billings licensed retailer on the way in (if needed) rather than pushing the Miles City retailers during the event-weekend rush, and should treat the entire drive as cannabis-free in both directions.
